Not everything worth putting on a website has to do with resumes or certifications. This page is for the other stuff — the things I care about, the communities I’m part of, and the tools I use to keep myself going. If you’re here for the professional side, you want the Documents page. If you’re here because you’re curious about the person behind the credentials, read on.
The Blue Angels Make a Mark!
October 10, 2019
So…I’m driving home late this afternoon, traveling south across the Golden Gate Bridge, and what do I see and hear…but the tail number 5 member of the Blue Angels, buzzing the South Tower!
Well, naturally, I got through the toll gate and off onto a surface road in the Presidio as fast as I could. Pulled over by a bluff on Lincoln Avenue overlooking Crissy Field, got out, and…started snapping pictures.

Here’s a link to a Google Photos album with more of them. Enjoy!
Mentoring & Service
U.S. Naval Academy Blue and Gold Officer
As a graduate of the United States Naval Academy (Class of 1978), I serve as a Blue and Gold Officer — the Academy’s network of volunteer representatives who interview and mentor high school students applying for admission. If you’re a prospective applicant in the San Francisco Bay Area (or the parent of one) and have questions about the Academy or the application process, feel free to reach out.
The International Space Settlement Design Competition (ISSDC)
I’ve served as an adult mentor and advisor for ISSDC, a multi-day aerospace industry simulation in which teams of high-school students design a space settlement to meet a set of engineering and business requirements. It’s one of the most rewarding things I do — watching a room full of teenagers go from overwhelmed to organized to presenting a professional-grade proposal in 48 hours is something else.
Managing Type 1 Diabetes
August 4, 2025
So…as a 47-year-plus Type 1 diabetic, I do, actually, try and count how many grams of carbohydrate I’m about to eat so I can give my insulin pump a reasonable guess at how many units of insulin to bolus.
Here’s a web snippet I copied from a site called Carb Counter.net:
(Find the custom-HTML-generating page to embed a snippet like this on your own website at: www.carb-counter.net/AddCustomContent.aspx)
This actually looks to be about as easy-to-use and useful a carb-counting web site as I’ve ever seen. Many thanks to Carb Counter.net. 😊
